pezzonovante is sicilian, in italian would be "pezzo da novanta". It means a man in power, the big boss, but apparently in sicilian it's used as a pejorative, with the meaning of dumbass, moron...

An Italian word, meaning a man with power or "Big Shot" as previous answerer.

It comes from the Italian "Pezzo da novanta" which literally means "ninety caliber cannon". It's a World War One reference about large artillery used on the Italian / Austrian front. Immigrants to the US used it to refer to powerful men such as attorneys, judges, or mob chieftains.

The pezzonovante is the "great I am," the guy who thinks he's important or a big shot, but he's a no account wise guy, a punk.  He's the "bossa da bachouse" or the boss of the outhouse.
