Water flows from an area of high potential to an area of low potential.  Pure water has a potential of 0. The addition of pressure increases water potential. The addition of solutes decreases it.  So if the solution the (plant) cell is in is hypotonic to it, the cell will gain water and become turgid.  If it is put in a hypertonic environment, it will lose water and become flaccid.
