Monogatari (Japanese: 物語) is a Japanese classic novel, a novel in traditional Japanese prose, an extended narrative comparable to an epic, and a collection of Japanese short stories that contain elements of poetry in the text. The extensive definition of "Monogatari" makes the term itself conditional and does not connect it with any particular literary genre. Monogatari is closely related to aspects of oral tradition and almost always includes fictional or fictionalized subjects, even when retelling.
